History of the forges and old industries of the Meuse valley

The Meuse Valley, known today for its peaceful nature and picturesque landscapes, was once the scene of intense industrial activity. From the 18th century onward, the region became a true economic powerhouse, thanks to its forges, quarries, and metallurgical industries.

The beginnings of the forges in the valley

The wealth of the Meuse valley iron ore, wood, and water made it a strategic location for forges. Since the Middle Ages, local resources have been exploited to produce agricultural tools, weapons, and everyday objects. The Ardennes, with their vast forests, provided the charcoal needed to fuel these workshops.

In the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution transformed small artisanal forges into modern industries. Towns like Dinant, Hastière, and Givet became renowned metallurgical centers throughout Europe. Local forges produced nails, chains, and naval parts, among other things.

Iconic industries

1. The Dinanderies of Dinant
   Dinant, famous for its copperwork, gave rise to the term “dinanderie.” Local artisans created engraved or hammered copper objects, ranging from tableware to musical instruments. These handcrafted works have survived the centuries and remain a source of regional pride.
2. Quarries and steelworks
   The Waulsort region was known for its limestone quarries. At the same time, steelworks such as those at Hastière produced parts for railway and naval construction.
3. Industrial mills
   Throughout the valley, watermills played a vital role in the processing of raw materials. These mills, often located near forges, were used to grind ore or power power hammers.

The fall of industry

With the depletion of local resources and international competition, the valley’s forges and factories declined in the 20th century. Many industrial sites were abandoned or converted. Today, they bear witness to this rich economic and artisanal past.
