The Domaine des Grottes de Han: An Underground and Wild Odyssey

A Must-Do Adventure from Bungalows du Bonsoy

If there is one natural gem that Wallonia is proud of, it is the Domaine des Grottes de Han (Caves of Han Estate). Located about a thirty-minute drive from Bungalows du Bonsoy, this exceptional site offers total immersion in the mysteries of the earth and the beauty of wildlife. For vacationers seeking wonder, it is the ultimate summer excursion.

The reputation of the Caves of Han extends far beyond our borders, and for good reason: they rank among the most beautiful in Europe. But the estate is not limited to its limestone depths; it also houses a vast 250-hectare wildlife park. A day in Han-sur-Lesse promises a journey back in time, where the power of geological forces meets the grace of the animal kingdom.

The Cave: A Cathedral of Stone and Light

A visit to the Han Caves is an extraordinary sensory experience. Carved by the Lesse River, which flows right through it, the cave reveals chambers of dizzying scale, adorned with ancient stalactites and stalagmites. The standard “Discovery” tour takes you through a magical labyrinth enhanced by LED lighting designed to respect this fragile environment.

The highlight is undoubtedly the “Origin” sound and light show, projected within the vast Salle d’Armes (Armoury Chamber). This immersive spectacle recounts the history of the cave and leaves visitors—both young and old—speechless. If you are a fan of geology and mineral landscapes, you will also appreciate the majesty of the Freÿr Rock, another of the region’s limestone wonders.

The Wildlife Park: Meeting the Lords of Our Forests

Upon emerging from the depths, the Estate invites you to explore its Wildlife Park. This vast, preserved area is a sanctuary for species that once roamed our lands, as well as for many animals still found in our Ardennes forests. Wolves, brown bears, lynx, bison, and deer roam here in a semi-wild state.

You have two options for this exploration: the traditional Safari-car—ideal for families with young children—or the 5.5 km walking trail, which offers a more intimate and quiet experience. This nature walk perfectly embodies the spirit of unplugging in the Ardennes that we champion at Bonsoy. And for the more adventurous, the “Tree Experience” offers a treetop course that lets you admire the canopy from a different perspective.

Back at Bungalows du Bonsoy, let the adrenaline fade. Prepare a delicious meal (perhaps one of these comforting Ardennes recipes adapted for summer?) and enjoy the peace and quiet of the terrace. If you are traveling with your dog, rest assured that Bonsoy is an ideal Ardennes haven for your four-legged companion—though please note they cannot accompany you inside the Cave or the Wildlife Park (a free kennel is available at the Domaine’s reception, however).
